Forming Healthy Daily Routines

Our lives are comprised of routines--work, school, mealtimes, etc. The question is, are they good routines? How happy we are is greatly determined by the habits we form and keep. How successful we are in reaching our life goals is affected by our routines and of course, the quality of our mental and physical health is deeply connected to our habits.

We're told it only takes 21 days to form a habit. We also know that's easier said than done. Routines and habits do in fact make life easier but getting started can be difficult. And sometimes it seems that only the negative habits (binge watching Netflix, hitting the snooze button) are the easy ones to create! Only positive routines will make a positive difference in our lives.

The key is to have more good than bad when it comes to routines. An exercise program that we regularly do is among the top seven good habits that improve our lives.

When we develop a routine, we save time and energy. We only have so much head space. When a habit is formed we can put our focus on other things, like being creative. We don't have to think about brushing our teeth because we‘ve made it a habit. Your yoga practice can be just as automatic and routine. Once you get in the habit of going to the studio, you’ll be amazed at how much you look forward to going. In the beginning, you will likely need to remind yourself of your commitment. Then you will need to get up and actually go to class. When you don’t feel like going, remind yourself of that amazing feeling you always have after yoga. The contentment is worth the push. Soon the reward and routine of your regular yoga practice will keep you coming back effortlessly.

Adopting a healthy exercise routine will enhance your body, mind, and soul. There is a confidence that comes from keeping promises to ourselves, and practicing yoga on a regular basis will have you trusting your own word. Plus, yoga will make you feel amazing, day after day.
