My 82 Year Old Mom Sings to Dummys

This weekend was Mother's Day. Last weekend my family and I cheered on my 82 year young mom at the Ms. Senior NY Pageant. Besides being beautiful and able to walk in four inch heels, my mom is a winner. She worked for over thirty years at Grumman Aerospace while being a great wife and raising my brother and I. Then she began her "second act" in community theatre and volunteering. She acted, sang, danced, taught dance, choreographed and directed plays. She's volunteered with mental health, veterans and mentally challenged adults. She's been an active contributor to the Seasoned Steppers dance group for over twenty years, performing in nursing homes and events all over Long Island.

In the Pageant she showcased two of her greatest talents, singing and comedy. The song she chose was Me and Mrs. Jones, by Billy Paul. (I'm sure modern audiences won't mind that mom changed the gender of Jones!) The song is perfect for mom's alto voice and her friend had "Mr. Jones" --a stuffed dummy in a suit. "Mr. Jones" sat in a chair while mom shared her tale of unrequited love--

and won second runner up! She's a great example of someone living life to the fullest and I'm so proud of her. She is kind, loving, selfless, and brave and I feel very blessed to call her mom. I can't wear heels like she can, but I hope to follow in her footsteps anyway.
